Aung San Suu Kyi wins this year's Bronisław Geremek Award granted by the Community of Democracies

- It was a great dream of the late Professor Geremek, my mentor and minister, to bring together democratic nations for the purpose of promoting something that we value the most - freedom, said Deputy Foreign Minister of the RP Jerzy Pomianowski  as he presented the Award.

Aung San Suu Kyi is currently a member of the Myanmar parliament. She had spent many years under house arrest, having supported  peaceful transition  and national reconciliation in a country ruled by a military junta.

The Award is conferred for outstanding achievements in advancing democracy and promoting democratic transformations; it was established after Professor Geremek's death.

The Community of Democracies, which grants the Award, is an international organization  affiliating democratic states and those on the path to democracy. The Community was founded in 2000 by Bronisław Geremek, the then Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

The presentation of the Award took place during the 7th Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies in Ulan Bator. The previous laureates are Nelson Mandela (2009), Cuban priest Jose Conrado Rodriguez (2010), and the Belarusian opposition (2011).
